Edinburgh 4-piece Retro Video Club make an explosive return with their new single ‘Checkmate’, released March 12. The song is their first release following a 2 year hiatus, in which the band focussed on new material. With ‘Checkmate’, the band prove in just under three minutes why they are one of Scotland’s most exciting new exports.

Providing an instant burst of pure indie rock joy, ‘Checkmate’ focusses on reflection at a time when we’re all considering what’s in the future.​ “Checkmate is a song about reflecting on your high school days & how the passing of time changes everything.”​ explains Liam Allison from the band, ​“It’s facing reality, realising you need to start growing up because life is starting to get serious. It’s ultimately life putting you in Checkmate, but you refusing to accept the game is over.”

Retro Video Club burst onto the scene in 2017, with a series of high-octane single releases, and a sell-out hometown show. Just a few months later, they were selling out 1,000 capacity venues (Edinburgh Assembly Rooms), and sharing stages with The Libertines among others.

‘Checkmate’ is the first track to be taken from the band’s new EP, due out later this year. The band will be announcing a string of new gigs soon, including a huge show at Glasgow’s SWG3.
